Baggage Claim

John 10:10

We all carry baggage at times in our lives, whether it’s because of mistakes that we have made, or things that have been done to us.

The problem with baggage is…

  • It slows us down.
  • It robs us of our joy.
  • It gives us a negative mindset.
  • It leaves us feeling worthless.
  • It makes us look back.

And that’s just to name a few of the problems!

Baggage exists because the world we live in is broken, but Jesus came to lighten the load and give us life.

Jesus was very clear in his purpose for coming to this world:

“The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them [you] a rich and satisfying life”. (John 10:10)

The context is that Jesus is in the middle of an analogy about sheep, and their shepherd. And how a shepherd protects their sheep from wolves trying to get into the pen and steal and kill the sheep.

But Jesus is using this analogy to give us this incredible truth about who He is, to tell us that He is our good shepherd, there to protect us from the enemies around us, and there to give us a rich and satisfying life.

It’s that rich and satisfying life that helps to lighten the load from the baggage we carry from our past mistakes, or the pain that we have experienced.

  • What are some examples of the baggage that you have carried in your life?
  • How does that baggage leave you feeling?
  • How might Jesus’ “rich and satisfying life” bring change to your baggage?
